Within the last three years, this industry has experienced the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as an election year that exposed the precarious situations that workers faced. Platform workers were directly affected and experienced a significant impact on their livelihoods. With the rise of food and essential goods and fuel costs, platform workers have had to work longer hours or quit the industry altogether for it to make financial sense.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp id=\"ba8c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph xl xm td kp b xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu jz xv xw xx ke xy xz ya kj yb yc yd ye er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Digital Economy Blueprint² \u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">envisages a nation where every citizen has the capability to participate and thrive in the digital economy and embrace \u003C\u002Fspan>technology for social impact. However, as \u003Ca class=\"af yf\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffair.work\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002Fsites\u002F17\u002F2023\u002F02\u002F230202_fairwork_kenya-report-2022_RZ_small.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Fairwork Kenya 2022 Report\u003C\u002Fa> observed, Kenyan platform workers are yet to realise this vision. The following were the key findings in last year’s Report:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp id=\"e578\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph xl xm td kp b xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu jz xv xw xx ke xy xz ya kj yb yc yd ye er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u003Cstrong class=\"kp jo\">Fair Pay\u003C\u002Fstrong>: There was insufficient evidence that workers for any of the nine platforms earn the minimum wage of KES 15,121 ($122) after costs or the living wage of KES 25,400 ($204) after work-related costs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp id=\"7da4\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph xl xm td kp b xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu jz xv xw xx ke xy xz ya kj yb yc yd ye er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u003Cstrong class=\"kp jo\">Fair Conditions\u003C\u002Fstrong>: Only Glovo and Uber out of nine platforms could evidence policies to prevent work-related risks like offering insurance, emergency SOS buttons and safety training. Glovo also provides safety gear like helmets and reflector jackets, but not always for free. Glovo got a second point for offering compensation for workers who cannot work due to sickness, accidents, or unforeseen circumstances.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp id=\"bf69\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph xl xm td kp b xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu jz xv xw xx ke xy xz ya kj yb yc yd ye er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u003Cstrong class=\"kp jo\">Fair Contracts\u003C\u002Fstrong>: Only Bolt, Uber, Glovo and Little provide clear and transparent terms and conditions subject to Kenyan law.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp id=\"29a7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph xl xm td kp b xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu jz xv xw xx ke xy xz ya kj yb yc yd ye er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u003Cstrong class=\"kp jo\">Fair Management\u003C\u002Fstrong>: Only Glovo, Little, and SweepSouth demonstrated effective communication channels and appeals processes, for example if workers are deactivated from the platform.
